Carlo-Maria Abate

Carlo Maria Abate (* July 10, 1932 in Turin ) is an Italian former race car driver.

Abate was one of the best GT drivers of his era, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Especially in the Ferrari 250 GTO he could put his driving skills time and again. There are different ways of writing to his middle name. In a number of publications it is also referred to as Abate Carlo Mario. Apparently he preferred even this notation.

Abate was factory driver at Ferrari and Porsche, but drove most of his sports car racing for the Scuderia Serenissima of Conte Giovanni Volpi. Abate also dabbled in Formula 1, but he was never in a World Championship race at the start. In 1962, he was fourth at the World Cup not counting Grand Prix of Naples on a Porsche. Other achievements include third places at the Mediterranea Grand Prix in 1962 and the Grand Prix of Syracuse in 1963. During the same year he reached on a Scuderia Centro Sud Cooper fifth place in the Grand Prix at Imola.

His greatest successes came in the sports car. Three times he was at the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the start, there were countable placements from though. 1961 stopped a gearbox failure quickly Duo Abate / Trintignant on a Ferrari 250 GT SWB at half time of the race. 1962 overtook Abate, this time with Colin Davis as a passenger, the same fate. An accident ended the race of Abate a year later also prematurely.

In the race for the sports car world championship but Abate could celebrate some success for Ferrari in the GT class. His greatest triumph was the victory at the Targa Florio in 1963, with Joakim Bonnier as team-mate for Porsche.

When the attempt failed, to obtain a usable racing car for the Grand Prix of Italy 1963 to Abate end of the season retired from racing.
