Carlo Petrini

Carlo Petrini ( born June 22, 1949 in Bra, Piedmont ) is an Italian journalist and founder of Slow Food.

Life

Petrini was born the son of a railway worker. At first he was an altar boy and chairman of the Diocesan Youth in Bra. After studying sociology at Trent, he became involved in politics. About the Partito di Unità list of Proletaria ( PdUP ) he was chosen in the 1970s to a city council of Bra. He operated at times an unlicensed radio station in Bra, whose closure could prevent prominent friends like Dario Fo and Fabrizio de André by personal presence.

Since 1977, he wrote in Italian magazines about food and drink and was involved in the founding of the magazine Gambero Rosso, which was initially one month supplement of the newspaper Il Manifesto.

Petrini founded the Society of Friends of Barolo in the 1980s. This was a reaction to the then Republic has become adulteration of Barolo wine with methanol. From 1986 Arcigola, an association with strong references to the Gambero Rosso and the journal La Gola developed in July ( Gluttony ). The trigger for the founding of Slow Food was the opening of a McDonald's restaurant in 1986 on the surrounded by ancient and baroque buildings Piazza Navona in Rome. As a protest Petrini organized a public spaghetti dinner at the Spanish Steps. On 9 December 1989 saw after the establishment of the international Slow Food movement in Paris. In Turin he cried with the Slow Food Salone del Gusto (Salon of Taste ) in life and in Pollenzo gastronomic Università di Gastronomic Sciences.

Petrini was co-editor of the world wine guide and wine guide Vini d' Italia. The Restaurant Guide osteria d' Italia he triggered a return to the gastronomic traditions of Italy. He is the author of the left-liberal daily La Repubblica.

2004 took on his initiative in Turin, a conference of the Bauer network Terra Madre held the first world meeting of nearly 5000 farmers. Patron was Prince Charles. 2006 and 2008, it was repeated. 2009 premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, the documentary Terra Madre by Ermanno Olmi.

In 2006, Petrini from the chair of Slow Food Italy, but remained President of Slow Food International. In 2007 he was confirmed in Puebla ( Mexico) for four years in this office.
