Carlo Recalcati

Carlo "Charlie" Recalcati ( born September 11, 1945 in Milan, Lombardy ) is an Italian basketball coach and former player, who coached the Italian national team from 2001 to 2009. He also won as a coach, the Italian championship with three different clubs. As a player he was from 1962 to 1979 for Pallacanestro Cantu and 1967-1976 active for the national team.

Career

As a player

Recalcati began in 1962 his career at Pallacanestro Cantu, where he remained until 1979. In the 1970s he formed with Pierluigi Marzorati one of the best guard duos in European basketball. With Cantu Recalcati won in 1968 and 1975, the Italian championship, three times the Korac Cup ( 1973-75 ) and the European Cup Winners' Cup ( 1977-79 ) and once the Intercontinental Cup ( 1975). Overall Recalcati scored in 434 league games for Cantu 6,396 points. His last two years as a player, of which the second player-coach, he graduated at CBM Parma.

With the Italian national Recalcati won at the European Championships in 1971 and 1975 respectively the bronze medal. He also participated in the World Championships 1967 and 1970, the Olympic Games in 1968 and 1976 and the European Championships in 1967 and 1969 in part. In total he played 166 matches for Italy, where he scored 1,239 points.

As a coach

From 1981 to 1984 trained Recalcati Alpe Bergamo, which he led until the Serie A1. Then he returned to Pallacanestro Cantu. There he reached four times in six years, although the semi-finals of the Italian championship, a finals remained for him but also denied as the title win in the Korac Cup, whose final he reached in 1989. With Viola Reggio Calabria, which he coached from 1990 to 1995, he rose in the A2 series from, but managed its chances of promotion and moved into the first two years in Serie A1 in the play-offs one. With Pallacanestro Varese, which he coached from 1997 to 1999, he was the second year surprisingly Italian masters. To the coach of the Italian national team Recalcati was appointed after the unsuccessful European Championship 2001. He won with her ​​the bronze medal at the 2003 European Championship and the silver medal at the Olympic Games 2004. Subsequently, however, was followed by disappointing results, but missed Italy at the European Championships in 2005 and 2007 and the 2006 World Cup in each of the quarter-finals. After Italy had not qualified for the 2009 European Championship, Recalcati remained until November of the year in office. He was replaced by Simone Pianigiani, who had succeeded him in Siena.
