Carlo Rossi (architect)

Carlo di Giovanni Rossi ( also Karl Ivanovich Rossi, born December 29, 1775 in Naples, .. † 6 Apriljul / April 18 1849greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian - Italian architect. He was especially known because he designed a large part of the St. Petersburg city center in the style of classicism.

Rossi was born to an Italian dancer. The father is not known, contemporary rumors went so far as to suggest Tsar Paul I as a father. After an apprenticeship with the architect Vincenzo Brenna in Saint Petersburg, he traveled to Italy from 1801 to 1803. From 1808 to 1814, he worked in Moscow and subsequently to 1816 in Pavlovsk. The rest of his life he spent back in Saint Petersburg.

Here he designed numerous courses, including the Palace Square and the Square of Arts, the Michael Palace, where the Russian Museum is housed, and the Alexandra Theatre and directly on tapered, named after him, Rossi Street.
