Carlo Scognamiglio

Luigi Carlo Scognamiglio Pasini (Italian Ausspr. ? / I ) ( born November 27, 1944 in Varese ) is an Italian economist, university professor and politician.

Biography

After school he started in 1963 to study economics at the Bocconi University in Milan, and in 1967 he graduated summa cum laude. After a subsequent work as an assistant at the university, he graduated from 1970-1971 postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics. Following this he worked since 1973 as Associate Professor of Corporate Finance and Economics at the University of Padua and the Bocconi University before he earned a reputation as Professor of Applied Industrial Economics at the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi sociali ( LUISS ) accepted in Rome in 1980. Later, he also worked as a consultant of treasure and industry ministers. Between 1984 and 1992 he was also rector of the LUISS.

He was elected as a member of the Partito Liberal Italiano ( PLI) as a member of the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica) in 1992, where he remained until 2001. After the dissolution of PLI he joined in 1994 the newly formed Unione Democrática per la Repubblica ( UDR) and was after the election victory of Silvio Berlusconi's center-right coalition Polo per le Libertà with just one vote in place of Giovanni Spadolini in April 1994 elected President of the Senate. This office he held until his replacement by Nicola Mancino in 1996.

On 21 October 1998 he was appointed by Prime Minister Massimo D' Alema of Defense and took office until the end of D' Alema first term on 22 December 1999 true.

After retiring from the Senate in 2001, he took his position as Professor of Applied Economics at the LUISS industry back on.
