Carlos Carvalhas

Carlos Alberto do Vale Gomes Carvalhas ( born November 9, 1941 in São Pedro do Sul ) is a Portuguese politician. He was the Portuguese Minister and General Secretary of the Portuguese Communist Party (PKP; Partido Comunista Português Portuguese ).

Life

Carvalhas is a trained economist and was during the dictatorship member of the student and the union movement. In 1969 he became a member of the PKP. He was Minister of Labour in five successive transitional governments after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

From 1976 to 1983 he was a member of the Central Committee of the PKP without permanent seat, he is since 1983 a full member of the Central Committee. He was also a member of the party executive and the Political Commission. On the XIII. ( extraordinary ) Congress of the PKP in 1990 was elected Carvalhas the Deputy Secretary-General. From December 1992 ( Fourteenth Congress ) to November 2004 (XVII Party Congress ) was Carvalhas Secretary General of the PKP.

He was a member from 1976 to 2005 as a Member of the Portuguese Parliament (Portuguese Assembleia da República ). In the elections for the European Parliament in 1989, he led the list of the electoral alliance Coligação Democrática Unitaria (Eng. " United Democratic Coalition " ) and was elected to the European Parliament. In 1991 he was the presidential candidate of PKP and got 635 373 votes ( 12.9 %).
