Carlos Costa (banker)

Carlos Costa da Silva ( born November 3, 1949 in Oliveira de Azeméis ) is a Portuguese economist and bank managers. He's since June 2010, Governor of the Banco de Portugal. He assumed the office of Vítor Constancio, who was appointed in the same year as Vice-President of the ECB.

He was from 2006, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank and is responsible for the financial operations of the bank financing in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as in Asia and South America. Previously, he held positions in the Supervisory Board of the Portuguese Caixa Geral de Aposentações, a bank for pension funds, as well as at the Banco Nacional Marino Ultra Itaú Unibanco and the.

Carlos Costa has earned a title in 1973 in economics at the University of Porto and received his doctorate there. In 1981, he joined the former Banco Português do Atlântico, Banco Comercial Português now (BCP ) in the research department. As a member of the EU Economic Policy Committee from 1986 to 1992 he was involved in the European integration before becoming Chef de Cabinet of the Portuguese EU Commissioner from 1993 to 1999.
