Carlos Humberto Romero

Major General Carlos Humberto Romero Mena (* February 29, 1924 in Chalatenango ) was from July 1, 1977 to October 15, 1979 President of El Salvador.

Military career

He was a cadet at the Escuela Politécnica and had a training for admission to the General Staff. He enjoyed a special training in riding in Mexico. Education in Mexico is a distinctive feature of his Tanda (training cohort ) versus juventud militar, which were often formed after the overthrow of Fulgencio Batista in the School of the Americas. His predecessor, Julio Adalberto Rivera and Fidel Sánchez Hernández, sent him:

  • As a delegate to the inauguration of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz as President of the Republic of Mexico in 1964.
  • As a delegate to the inauguration of Misael Pastrana Borrero as President of the Republic of Colombia in 1970.
  • As a delegate to the VII Conferencia de Ejercitos Americanos (CEA ) Conference of American Armies (CAA ) in Buenos Aires from 29 October 1966 to November 1966.
  • As delegates to the Sixth Conference of the American intelligence services to Punta del Este, Uruguay from 12 to 14 April 1967.

Minister for Defence and Public Safety

1 July 1972, Romero became minister for defense and public safety under his two predecessors. 1973 Romero was chairman of the Consejo de Defensa Centroamericana ( CONDECA ).

Carlos Humberto Romero served as Minister for the murderous repression of peaceful protest against the restriction of freedom of expression, on 30 July 1975. Students of the Universidad de El Salvador ( UES ) protesting the prevention of a traditional student Kritikburleske on July 26, 1975 in Santa Ana.

Government

Carlos Humberto Romero continued the succession of Presidents of the military party Partido Nacional de Conciliation (PCN ). The PCN reestablished the paramilitary Organización Democrática Nacionalista one for their election propaganda. His two successors Colonel José Guillermo Garcia and Colonel Jaime Abdul Gutiérrez Avendaño conducted the election farce of 20 February 1977 from the offices of the state-owned telephone company ANTEL. The Zentralwahlrat published an election result that makes the opposition appear as the winner; a short time later, "corrected" it is the result and proclaimed the "victory" of General Humberto Romero, candidate of the oligarchy, the army and the U.S. Embassy. Carlos Humberto Romero took office on July 1, 1977. He answered the complaints of the opposition, it is at his election a fraud, with the state of emergency for thirty days. State power was further applied in the form of steady state terrorism. On October 15, 1979 Romero, who happened to find himself on a state visit to the United States, from the ANTEL Tanda, which had brought him to office, put down again. Romero went to Guatemala into exile.
