Life

On October 10, 1868 landowners CM called de Céspedes of its sugar mill La Demajagua in Manzanillo from all Cubans to fight against the Spanish colonial power ( Grito de Yara ). He had all his slaves free, and called on them to participate in the fight.

On April 10, 1869, he was elected President of the Cuban Republic formed in the subsurface ( Asamblea de Guaimaro ).

After his dismissal as president (1873 ) his departure to exile by the new Cuban government was prevented because they refused to give him the position of an escort. In 1874 he fell in battle with the Spanish colonial troops after his hiding place was betrayed. His body was issued by the Spanish colonial authorities publicly in Santiago de Cuba and buried in a mass grave. His remains were recovered from the mass grave in 1910 and transferred to the Pantheon. Popularly Céspedes is known as father of the nation, because he, when his son was taken prisoner by Spanish soldiers decided not to stop fighting and exchange of his son, saying: " All Cubans are my sons ." His son was killed then.
