Carlos Mendieta

Carlos Mendieta y Montefur (* November 4, 1873 in Las Villas, Cuba, † 1960) was a Cuban physician and politician and from 18 January 1934 to the December 12, 1935 President of the Republic of Cuba.

Carlos Mendieta took as a colonel in part on the side of the Cuban independence movement against the Spanish colonial rule in the War of Independence ( 1895-1898 ). After the war he founded together with José Miguel Gómez, the " Federal Republican Party" ( Partido Republicano Federal), for which he was elected to Parliament.

Also, together with José Miguel Gómez, he founded the "Conservative Party" ( Partido Conservador ) 1904. Mendieta separated politically from Gomez and Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso supported against President Mario García Menocal. In 1916, he ran with Zayas: Zayas as a presidential candidate, Mendieta as Vice President. 1917 took Mendieta together with Zayas a coup attempt against Menocal and went after the defeat for one year into exile. In 1918 he returned to Cuba and was again deputy. In internal party disputes the " Liberal Party ", he was defeated by candidate Gerardo Machado. At the end of the parliamentary term he retired to Camaguey from public life and devoted himself to his business. Because of a newspaper article ( " ¡ Adios, dictadura! "), Which was directed against the dictatorship of Machado, Mendieta was arrested in 1931.

Mendieta founded the " Party of National Unity " ( Partido Unión Nacionalista ) and was born on January 18, 1934 after a period of constantly changing presidents, one of whom even officiated only six hours, the first who was able to last longer in office (two years ). His candidacy was supported by the army chief Fulgencio Batista, who wielded the real political power in the background.

Under his presidency, the Platt Amendment was removed from the Cuban Constitution to public pressure.
