Carlos Ortega

Carlos Ortega Carvajal is a Venezuelan trade union and political leaders. Because of its role in the general strike in 2002, he was sentenced to nearly 16 years' imprisonment. On 13 August 2006 he escaped from prison.

In 2001 he was elected leader of the CTV ( Confederación de Trabajadores de Venezuela), who at the time the largest trade union in Venezuela. The legality of the election result was challenged and the Supreme Court refused their recognition, but Ortega remained chairman of CTV. In April 2002, under the leadership of Carlos Ortega, the CTV declared a general strike.
