Carlos Ortíz

Carlos Ortiz ( born September 9, 1936 in Ponce ) is a retired Puerto Rican boxer, the world champion in the light welter and light weight was. He is not related to Manuel Ortiz.

Career

When his family in his childhood moved to New York, he was involved in many street fights. This led him to boxing and he began to work out at the Madison Square Boys Club.

At the age of 18 he became a professional in 1955 and won his first 20 fights. He won on 12 June 1959, the vacant welterweight world championship in a rematch against Kenny Lane ( KO2 ). Since the title at that time was not particularly considered - the Light Welterweight was not the original weight classes and 13 years had not fought for the crown - hardly aroused the interest. Nevertheless, he was with this title for only the second Puerto Rican world champion after Sixto Escobar. He suggested Battling Torres KO, defeating the Italians Duilio Loi in the U.S. on points before the September 1, 1960 controversial subject him to his home and had to give up his title. After he lost the third duel in 1961, he was cooking and went down to the lightweight.
