Carlos Pezoa Véliz

Carlos Pezoa Véliz (actually Carlos Enrique Moyano Jana ) (* July 21, 1879 Santiago, Chile, † April 21, 1908 there ), was a Chilean poet, writer and journalist. He received recognition for his poetry.

Life and work

Carlos Pezoa Véliz is the most important poets of his time in Chile and the Latin American postmodernism is added. Coming from a humble background, he described the province of his country and the lives of ordinary people in melancholic and calm tones; Winter scenes and poverty determine its language. He was influenced by Émile Zola's naturalism. A wider public he was known in 1899 thanks to his poems Hijo del pueblo y Libertaria. In 1902 he moved as a school teacher to Viña del Mar and was able to publish in various newspapers and magazines. During an earthquake in 1906, he was severely injured. With a long convalescence, and other health complications, he moved from one hospital to another, until he died in solitude in April 1908. Only after his death, his poems were published in book editions.
