Carlos Seixas

José Antonio Carlos de Seixas ( born June 11, 1704 Coimbra, † August 25, 1742 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese composer and harpsichordist.

Life

Son of the organist of Trinity Church Coimbra, Francisco Vaz. After the death of his father Seixas took over at the age of 14 years at first this post. From 1720 lived Seixas in Lisbon, first as organist and later as Vice-Kapellmeister of the Royal Chapel. Kapellmeister at this time was Domenico Scarlatti, the Seixas succeeded after his departure in the same office. He held it until his death in 1742.

Work

Seixas wrote an extensive oeuvre for harpsichord; handed is the composition of about 700 sonatas for the instrument, which, because of the earthquake of Lisbon ( 1755) are obtained only 105.

The difficult source material, from the reason mentioned above, also applies to his sacred compositions and orchestral works. Get inter alia, a Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra, one of the earliest of its kind in Europe, a three-movement Symphony in B minor in Italian style and a French overture. The sonatas by Seixas are modeled on Domenico Scarlatti oriented, but have a decidedly autonomous, very lyrical musical language of sometimes considerable harmonic daring.
