Carlton Fisk

Carlton Ernest Fisk ( born December 26, 1947 in Bellows Falls, Vermont ) is a former American professional baseball player in Major League Baseball who played as catcher 24 years for the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox. His nickname is Pudge.

Biography

Carlton Fisk was born in Vermont, but grew up in Charlestown, New Hampshire. There he completed high school and then attended the University of New Hampshire, where he played baseball and basketball. 1967 obliged him the Boston Red Sox in the draft. Fisk was the fourth player selected in the entire process. His first game for the Red Sox, he played on 18 September 1969 a full member of the team, he was however only in 1972. This year he had a batting average of 29.3 %, hit 22 homers and led the American League with nine triples on. To date, he is the last catcher who led this category. This year he won the Gold Glove Award and was elected Rookie of the year the American League. In the following years, Fisk had always struggled with injuries and often missed a large part of the season.

In 1975 he began after an injury in the preparation his season in June. Upon his return, the Red Sox took over after a week the standings in the AL East and were able to celebrate the championship in the American League. In the World Series, the Red Sox faced the Cincinnati Reds. In the sixth game of the series Fisk hit a ball thrown by Pat Darcy in the 12th inning to the foul pole at Fenway Park to 7-6 victory in one of the most dramatic games of the World Series history. In memory of that blow the foul pole in Boston was then often referred to as Fisk Pole.

1977 and 1978 were again very good years for Fisk. He fought with Thurman Munson of the Yankees for the title of best catcher in baseball. Fisk was nominated twice as Catcher in the starting lineup at the All -Star game, but the Yankees got themselves in both years the championship in the American League and won in two years in the World Series.

After the 1980 season, Fisk became a free agent and moved to the surprise of the Boston fans to the Chicago White Sox. With the White Sox in 1983, he won the title in the American League West, but they lost in the American League Championship Series to the Baltimore Orioles in four games. His last game for the White Sox Carlton Fisk played on 22 June 1993 at the age of 45 years.

Carlton Fisk was used in his career in 2226 playing as a catcher, more than any other player in the history of Major League on this position. With 72 home runs than forty years old, he also cites this category. With his 376 career home runs, he led the Catcher in well, but was surpassed by Mike Piazza. A total of eleven times, he took part in the All- Star game.

Fisk is one of the few baseball players who are adored by the supporters of two teams. The White Sox 's shirt number 72 is no longer awarded since 14 September 1997, the Red Sox awarded his number 27 since 4 September 2000 to any other player. In 2000, his election followed in the Baseball Hall of Fame. On 7 August 2005, the Chicago White Sox unveiled a statue at U.S. Cellular Field by Carlton Fisk.
