Carlton (Victoria)

Carlton is a district in the center of Melbourne. It is located about 2 km north of the city center and in 2006 was 12.050 inhabitants, thus he is one of the most populous parts of the city. The name is probably derived from the Carlton House, London.

Carlton is home to the Carlton Gardens, a park with the Royal Exhibition Building, which has the status of a World Heritage Site. In particular, the Lygon Street is known for its Italian restaurants and cafes and is also known as " Little Italy " of Melbourne.

Due to its proximity to two of the largest universities of Melbourne, the University of Melbourne and RMIT, many students live in Carlton.
