Carlyle is a city and county seat of Clinton County in the south of the U.S. state of Illinois. The city is located in the Metro - East called the eastern part of the metropolitan area of Greater St. Louis the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri. In 2000, Carlyle had 3406 inhabitants.

Geography

History
Carlyle was founded in 1818 by Charles W. Slade and named after the family name of his grandmother. Slade took great pains to make Carlyle the capital of Illinois, but lost this fight, 1819, to Vandalia. 1824 Clinton County was formed in 1825 and Carlyle selected as its administrative headquarters. Both went back again on the initiative of Charles W. Slade.
Carlyle is today through the Carlyle Lake mainly an attraction for tourism.
