Carmania (satrapy)

Carmania (Greek Καρμανία, latin Carmania ) is an ancient landscape in the south of present-day Iran. It is bordered to the west by the Persis, to the north by the Parthyene, to the east by Gedrosia, to the south by the Persian Gulf. It was first mentioned by the historian Polybius (5, 79, 3), but Herodotus mentioned in his Histories (1, 125) a Persian tribe of Germánioi ( Γερμάνιοι ), which took over Strabo and Diodorus.

The landscape is mostly barren mountain country, which turns into a desert in the north. Arrian raises the fertility of the soil karma African forth (Ind. 32, 4). The main town Karmana ( Κάρμανα ) is now called Kerman and is the capital of Kerman province.
