Carmen Saliare

The Carmen Saliare is a fragmentary preserved cult song in archaic Latin. The singing was a part of the rituals that were performed by the Roman priesthood of Salii. At the center of these rituals were Mars and Quirinus, they were held in March and October. During the processions and the Carmen Saliare was sung.

A total of 35 fragments of the hymn have been preserved, among others, Marcus Terentius Varro in his work De Lingua Latina:

It was not previously possible linguists to translate the text completely. The well-known Latin words seem to relate to thunder, Janus and Ceres. Even Marcus Tullius Cicero was not a lot of singing interpret. A comment that Lucius Aelius Stilo Praeconinus wrote is lost.
