The Karnataka -Barbe ( Barbodes carnaticus ), named after the Indian state of Karnataka, is a carp fish from India. It is called in English Carnatic Carp, Tamil Pallikendai காவேரிக் கென்  டை and Malayalam Kaverimeen കാവേരികെണ്ട.

Description

Barbodes carnaticus is characterized by an elongated and stocky body. It has a relatively small head part, bead-shaped lips, small barbels and large scales. On the sidelines a black band is often visible. The color varies depending on the type of water body of gray black, dark blue to golden brown. The peduncle is usually colored orange. The Karnataka -Barbe is on average 60 inches long and weighs 1.5 kilograms. In the Whest Gats in India specimens were caught up over 12 kilograms and a length up to about 90 centimeters. The relationships between growth and age of the Karnataka -Barbe have recently been studied in a scientific study.

Dissemination

The Karnataka -Barbe lives in tropical rivers of India. She comes, inter alia in the Cauvery and Krishna River.

Way of life

Barbodes carnaticus It likes in rapids and deep pools behind fast-flowing sections of rivers and large streams on. Adult specimens often look to large rocks, boulders, washouts and other underwater obstacles as a shelter. They feed on leaves and seeds that fall into the water, as well as detritus. Spawning takes place in the months of July-August, the young fish develop from September to December.

The Karnataka -Barbe serves as a food fish and game fish with anglers.
