Carndonagh

Carndonagh ( Irish: Carn Domhnach ) is a town in County Donegal. The place is located in the northern part of the Irish Republic, in the midst of the Inishowen Peninsula and has 1,923 inhabitants ( 2006). Settled in place is a shirt factory and alcohol industry.

Carndonagh Cross

Near the church is the main attraction Carndonaghs which greatly eroded early Christian Donagh Cross ( also Carndonagh Cross or St. Patrick's Cross called ) from the 7th century. The upper part zeift a cross-shaped nodes Muste. At the bottom of a large illustrated worshiper is surrounded by two and two smaller people. At the bottom of a left -facing triad is depicted. On the back braid is visible. The cross is one of the oldest in Ireland and belongs to a former monastery, which was built by St. Patrick for Bishop Mac Cairthen. It is flanked by two cross - slabs. A landmark of the city is the Sacred Heart Church, built between 1942 and 1945. You offers 1500 visitors. Four statues were made by Albert Power (1881-1945) from Dublin granite for the church.

The train station of Carndonagh was opened on July 1, 1907, but closed down already on 2 December 1935.

Near the village of John Colgan was born, a later Franciscans, have been handed down from the three volumes of a scale to six volumes work on the Irish saint ( Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae ). Colgan probably died in 1657 in Leuven.
