Carnell Peak

BWf1

Carnell Peak is a 1730 m high summit in the southern part of the Watlack Hills in the Heritage Range, the southern part of the West Antarctic Ellsworthgebirges.

Carnell peak was mapped by the United States Geological Survey as part of the compilation of Ellsworthgebirges in the years 1961-1966 through site surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the summit after Lieutenant DL Carnell from the Civil Engineer Corps of the United States Navy. Carnell served in the summer of 1965/66 as a maintenance officer on the runway Williams Field at McMurdo Sound and was responsible for the first through hole of the Ross Ice Shelf at 50 meters depth.
