Carolina Maria de Jesus
Carolina Maria de Jesus ( born March 14, 1914 in Sacramento, Minas Gerais, † 13 February 1977 Parelheiros, São Paulo) was a Brazilian writer.
Biography
De Jesus was born in the rural state of Minas Gerais, the daughter of two farm workers who were descended from African slaves. A large part of her life she spent in favelas of São Paulo. She worked there as a maid and moved up three children. She became famous by posting their personal experiences from the favelas. Her diaries published in 1960 under the title Quarto de despejo ( Diary of poverty). Later followed by other publications, some of which were also translated into German. With her work, she raised awareness of the conditions in the Brazilian slums.
