Carolina Rediviva

Carolina Rediviva is the main library of the University of Uppsala and one of the great old buildings in the city. The name means the resurrected Carolina. This is an allusion to the former university building that. According to Charles IX named Academia Carolina, which was formerly next to the cathedral.

The library was founded in 1622 and is the oldest and one of the largest in Sweden. The building was designed by Carl Fredrik Sundvall. Between 1888 and 1892 major renovations took place, where the staircase had to give way in favor of lecture hall, library and archive. External alterations and extensions took place from 1913 to 1917, for which the government provided 599,000 crowns available.

The building houses the Codex argenteus from the 5th - 6th Century, one of the oldest written records in a Germanic language.
