Carolus Sigonius

Carlo Sigonio, Latin Carolus Sigonius (* 1524 in Modena; † August 12, 1584 ) was an Italian humanist and historian.

Life

Sigonio was born in Modena, distinguished himself early by his knowledge of Greek and began a long career as a teacher in Modena, Venice, Padua and Bologna. His greatest work is " De regno Italiae " ( 1574 ), a study of Italian history 570-1200. He, too wrote about the history of ancient Rome and Athens. Other of his works dealt with areas of philosophy. In his historical writings he showed a special interest in the impact of the laws on public institutions. His " Livy " issue received much applause. In 1583 he published in Venice a band that supposedly contained a work of Marcus Tullius Cicero, but was regarded as his own.
