Carovigno

Carovigno is an Italian commune in the province of Brindisi in Puglia on the Salento Peninsula with 16,187 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). Still belongs to the municipality of Torre Santa Sabina.

To the municipality of Carovigno also includes the two seaside resorts Pantanagianni and Specchiolla, and Serra Nova.

Etymology

The name, in an attempt to translate from Italian, means " Expensive wine fields."

Until the last century it was called nor Carbrun. An old villa on the road to San Vito dei Norman dates from this period. A hotel named Carbrun testifies still the old name.

A note of Clearchus of Soli mentioned a Carbina ( Κάρβινα ) as a city of Messapians. Also finds of inscriptions in messapic dialect in Carovigno suggest a justification of the city in antiquity.
