Carpathian Biosphere Reserve

Carpathian Biosphere Reserve (English Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, CBR) is one of the largest nature reserves in Ukraine and recognized by UNESCO since 1992. Objective is the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of biodiversity (biodiversity).

The Carpathian Mountains National Park is part of this Biosphere Reserve.

Geography

The area is located in southwestern Ukraine, near the border with Romania and Hungary, and forms the northeastern part of the mitgeprägten by German settlers cultural landscape of the Zips. The reserve area currently consists of eight sub-areas. 2002, the nature reserve covered an area of 53 630 hectares. Of this area, more than 80% is forested. This includes the last beech - forests that are since 2007 recognized World Natural Heritage by UNESCO.

In the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve all natural and climatic zones of the Ukrainian Carpathians are represented: Both the characteristic of foothill plains as well as the subalpine and alpine zones. The lowest point is 170 m above sea level in Narzissental. The highest point is the highest peak in Ukraine, the 2061 m high Howerla.

With a monument to the center of Europe has been marked, it is in the reserve area, about twelve kilometers south of the city Rakhov. Rakhov is also the administrative seat of the biosphere reserve.
