The Carpentaria Highway is a highway in the northeast of Australia's Northern Territory. It connects the Stuart Highway at Daly Waters with the Savannah Way in Borroloola on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The road is signposted along its entire length as National Highway 1.

Course

The Carpentaria Highway and 4 km south of Daly Waters, where it branches off in an easterly direction from the Stuart Highway (N1 / N87 ). Along the way there are some branches to scattered farms in the outback. The only large town in the course of the Carpentaria Highway is Cape Crawford after 269 km. In Cape Crawford of the Tablelands Highway ( S11) branches off and leads south to the Barkly Highway ( N66 ). From the north ends of the Savannah Way, which is a Outbackpiste in this area and north to the Roper Highway ( S20) draws.

The Carpentaria Highway runs along the Savannah Way continues northeast past the McArthur River mine, where silver, zinc and lead are mined, and the now-closed Merlin diamond mine. In Borroloola, about 70 km northeast of the mines, ending the Carpentaria Highway and the Savannah Way ( R1) leads as Great Top Road towards southeast to Burketown in Queensland.

The highest point in the course of the highway is 319 m and the lowest at 7 m.

Road conditions and gas stations

The Carpentaria Highway is asphalted and extended as a two-lane road. Tank facilities are available at the beginning of the road at the Hiway Inn, Cape Crawford and end of the road in Borroloola.
