Carpzov

The Carpzov family (also Carpzow, Karpzov, Karpzow ) is a famous Saxon family of scholars from the 16th to the 18th century. It originates from Carpzov Simon, who was mayor of Brandenburg an der Havel in the middle of the 16th century.

Simon Carpzov left two sons:

  • Joachim Carpzov (1585-1628, also Carpezon, Carpenzon, Carpezan, Carpezano, Carpe tooth, Carpenzan, Carpensonius ), General Feldzeugmeister and
  • Benedict Carpzov the Elder (1565-1626), Professor of Law. He had five sons: Benedict Carpzov the Younger (1595-1666), a criminal lawyer and witches theorist, considered one of the founders of the German law, is one of the most famous.
  • August Carpzov (1612-1683), has established itself as a statesman to the land around Coburg deserves.
  • Christian Carpzov (1605-1642) was a professor of law to Frankfurt ( Oder).
  • Konrad Carpzov became a professor of law at the University of Wittenberg and Chancellor by the Administrator of Magdeburg.
  • Johann Benedict Carpzov I was a professor of theology in Leipzig. His epitaph is again from 2010 in Leipzig Paulinerkirche. He had the following descendants ( among others ): Johann Benedict Carpzov II (1639-1699), German Lutheran theologian, ethnologist and philologist Johann Benedict Carpzov (1670-1733) Master and Saturday preacher at St. Nicolai Church in Leipzig Johann Benedict Carpzov IV (1720-1803), professor of theology and philology at the University of Helmstedt, Abbot of king Lutter
  • Johann Benedict Carpzov III. (1675-1739), historian and lawyer Friedrich Benedict Carpzov II (1702-1744), German jurist and legal scholar
