Carrasco Province (Bolivia)

Carrasco is a province in the eastern part of the Bolivian department of Cochabamba.

Location

The province is one of sixteen provinces in the department of Cochabamba. It is bounded on the northwest by the province of Chapare, to the west by the province and the province Tiraque Arani, on the southwest by the province Mizque, on the southeast by the province Campero and on the east by the department of Santa Cruz.

The province extends approximately between 15 ° 56 'and 18 ° 02' south latitude and 64 ° 42 ' and 66 ° 00' west longitude, its extent from east to west is 110 kilometers from north to south 230 km.

Population

The population of the province Carrasco has risen in the past two decades to nearly double:

42.7 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 70.4 percent. (1992)

68.8 percent of the population speak Spanish, 87.4 percent Quechua, Aymara 3.3 percent, and 1.0 percent other indigenous languages. (1992)

94.9 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 72.3 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

82.2 percent of the population are Catholics, 15.2 percent are Protestant (1992).

The Carrasco province is divided into six municipios:

  • Municipio Totora - 12,555 inhabitants ( 2005)
  • Municipio Pojo - 15,777 inhabitants
  • Municipio Pocona - 13,784 inhabitants
  • Municipio Chimoré - 19,456 inhabitants
  • Municipio Puerto Villarroel - 47 947 inhabitants
  • Municipality of Entre Rios ( since 2004) - 30,398 inhabitants
