Carré Theatre

The Carré Theatre is a theater on the Amstel River in Amsterdam, which is used as a permanent circus buildings or large Music Hall since its founding in 1887. Until 1911 and then again since the 100 -year anniversary in 1987 was allowed and may the name Royal ( Royal ) lead theater.

The theater was built by the German circus director Oscar Carré Circus Carré to give performances during the winter months. It is architecturally held in a representative neo-renaissance style. On 3 December 1887, the first performance of the circus took place. At the beginning of the 20th century the building was used for vaudeville and revue performances. At times, Italian operas and operettas were given. Dutch stars and international celebrities like Josephine Baker or the clown Grock performed here.

After the Second World War, musicals, cabarets (such as with Herman van Veen ) and pop concerts were added. In the winter months a circus program is shown as before. In 2004, the theater was completely renovated, retaining the historic facade and interior design have been retained.
