Carrefour is the second largest city in Haiti on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The city has 439 581 inhabitants ( 2005). In 1996 there were 290 204. According to the current administrative structure is part of the Arrondissement de Port -au -Prince in the department of Ouest.
Together with the capital Port -au -Prince and Petionville and Delmas towns it forms the so-called Aire METROPOLITAINE.
Carrefour is a city that prevails in great poverty, characterized by child labor (including slavery illegal ) and gangs. In the slums Feuilles de Carrefour in 1999, eleven young men were executed in a massacre.
On 12 January 2010, a major earthquake occurred in Haiti. According to a spokesman for the World Food Programme half of the buildings were destroyed in Carrefour.
