History
Findings and excavations indicate a prehistoric settlement of the district. The present district was created only in the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg. He went in 1836 from the merger of the previously independent circuits Oliveira do Conde and Currelos forth.
Culture and sights
Architectural monuments include mansions, stone fountains, historic public buildings and a variety of religious buildings, including the Gothic Igreja Matriz de Oliveira do Conde (also Igreja de São Pedro). The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.
In the village of Cabanas de Viriato is the landmarked house of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, and will be further developed into a memorial center for him. He allowed as a diplomat in France tens of thousands to flee from the Nazis, contrary to the instructions of his government, the Salazar regime.

Traffic
Carregal do Sal is located on the railway line Linha da Beira Alta.
