Carrie P. Meek

Carrie P. Meek ( born April 29, 1926 in Tallahassee, Florida) is a former American politician. Between 1993 and 2003, she represented the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Carrie Pittman, so her maiden name, and raised in Florida at the time of racial segregation. She graduated from Lincoln High School and then studied until 1946 at the Florida A & M University. Since it was denied African-Americans at that time to show some courses in Florida, she continued until 1948 continued her studies at the University of Michigan. She then worked as a teacher at the Bethune Cookman - University in Daytona Beach. In 1961, she moved to Miami, where she worked in the administration of the Miami -Dade County Community College. She was instrumental in the complete in the 1963 racial integration at this school.

Politically Meek was a member of the Democratic Party. From 1972 to 1975 she was a member of the Health Committee ( Health System - Health Planning Council ). Between 1979 and 1983 she was a Member of the House of Representatives from Florida; 1983-1993 she was a member of the State Senate. In the congressional elections of 1992, Carrie Meek was in the 17th electoral district of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where they became the successor of William Lehman on January 3, 1993. After four elections she was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 2003, five legislative sessions. There they stood up for utilities to repair the damage caused by Hurricane Andrew. They also argued for an improvement in the health and education sectors and in infrastructure.

In 2002 she gave up for reelection. Your 1966 born son Kendrick was elected this year as her successor in Congress.
