Carroll County (Illinois)

The Carroll County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 15,387 inhabitants and a population density of 13.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mount Carroll.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Illinois and has an area of 1,206 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water surface. History

The Carroll County was formed in 1838 from parts of the former Jo Davies County. It was named after Charles Carroll (1737-1832), a Großbrundbesitzer and politician from Maryland and the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The decision to name the county after him, met Issac Chambers, the first settler in the area. The real settlement began only after the Emmert, Halderman & Co. built the first sawmill in the area of Mount Carroll and thus created jobs. The harvested wood was transported to the adjacent Mississippi. After the first log cabins were built by the company for employees, 1844, the first public buildings were built. In the same year also came Joe Miles, the first lawyer in the area and opened a trading post, and the first post office. 1869, the first regular school was taken with 5 classrooms and five teachers in service.
