Carroll County (Kentucky)

Carroll County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carrollton.

Geography

The County is located in northern Kentucky, bordering the state of Indiana, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 356 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Gallatin County, Owen County, Henry County and Trimble County.

History

Carroll County was formed on February 9, 1838 from parts of Gallatin County. It was named for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,155 people in 3,940 households and 2,722 families. The population density was 30 people per km ². The racial the population was composed of 95.16 % White, 1.94 % African American, 0.23 % Native American, 0.17 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 1.42 % from other ethnic groups. 1.04% were descended from two or more races. 3.25 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,940 households out of which 33.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.4 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, 30.9 percent were non-families, 25.3 percent of all households and 10.1 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.98.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.3 percent population under 18 years, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 years and 12.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 99.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 35,925, and the median income for a family was $ 44,037. Males have a median income of $ 33,588, women $ 20,974. The per capita income was $ 17,057. 10.4 percent of families and 14.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 19.8 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 21.6 percent of those 65 years.
