Carroll County (Maryland)

The Carroll County is a county located in the U.S. state of Maryland. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Westminster.

Geography

The county is separated by the Mason - Dixon Line to the north by Pennsylvania. It has an area of 1,172 square kilometers; of which eight square kilometers (0.72 percent) of water. Adjacent counties are:

History

The Carroll County was formed in 1837 from parts of Baltimore and Frederick counties. It was named after Charles Carroll (1737-1832), one of the founding fathers of the United States.

During the American Civil War, the population decreased rapidly as the population was divided for and against secession. 1863 took place crucial troop movements in the context of the Battle of Gettysburg with approximately 160,000 men in the county.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2000 lived in Anne Arundel County 150 897 people in 52 503 households, and 41,109 families. The population density was 336 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.7 percent white, 2.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and 0.3 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.0 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 52 503 households out of which 39.7 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers and 21.7 percent were non-families. 17.5 percent of all households were single-person households and 7.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size is 3.18 people.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 10.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94 men.

The average income of a household was $ 60,021, for a family is $ 66,430. Males had a median income of $ 44,191, women $ 30,599. The per capita income was $ 23,829. Approximately 2.7 percent of families and 3.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
