Carsten Dahl

Carsten Dahl ( born October 3, 1967 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish jazz pianist.

Life and work

Dahl trained as a percussionist at Ed Thigpen and Alex Riel on Rytmisk Music in Copenhagen before 1988 he moved to the piano. He quickly became known throughout Europe and worked with musicians such as Johnny Griffin, James Moody, Andy Sheppard, Joe Lovano, Lutz Büchner, Ted Curson, Carmen Lundy, Jerry Bergonzi, Ed Neumeister, Tom Kirkpatrick, Jim Snidero, Phil Wilson, Pete Yellin, Wynton Marsalis, Jerry Bergonzi, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, Walter Booker, Jesper Thilo, Hans Ulrik Fredrik Lundin, Trine -Lise Väring, Palle Mikkel Borg, Tim Hagans and Eddie Gomez. Working in a trio with Arild Andersen and Patrice Héral and with Lennart Ginman and Thomas Blachman solidified his reputation as a major jazz pianist of the younger generation.

He toured several European countries as well as Mexico and South Africa and came into New York City with the trio of Mads Vinding on (with whom he plays with Alex Riel since 1999) and was, among other things awarded the Ben Webster Prize (1997 ) and the JASA Prize ( 2002). In 2006 he received the Django d' Or ( Denmark) as Master of Jazz.

Dahl taught at the Conservatory and later at the Esbjerg Rytmisk of Music in Copenhagen. He composed, among others four piano pieces, a string quartet, a piece for violin and piano, and a work for tango orchestra.
