Carteolol is a drug from the group of non-selective beta-blockers with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. Due to the effect on the cardiac β1 - and β2 - receptors carteolol lowers the impact frequency and force of contraction of the heart, the AV conduction velocity and the plasma renin activity. It is therefore appropriate pectoris for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and angina.
Carteolol also lowers intraocular pressure by reducing aqueous humor formation and is used for the treatment of glaucoma. The exact mechanism of action is not known.
