Carter County (Kentucky)

Carter County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grayson, which was named after Colonel William Grayson, who supported George Washington. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, is in the north about 30 miles from Ohio, to the southeast about 20 miles from West Virginia and has an area of 1067 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greenup County, Boyd County, Lawrence County, Elliott County, Rowan County and Lewis County.

History

Carter County was formed on February 9, 1838 from parts of Greenup County and Lawrence County. It was named for William Grayson Carter, a U.S. senator.

According to the census of 2000, there were 26 889 people in Carter County.
