Carthage is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Panola County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in near the center of the county, in eastern Texas, is about 30 km from Louisiana away and has a total area of 27.3 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The term Panola is the Indian word for cotton. The city was named after the place of origin of Judge John Allison, a cotton buyer from Panola County, Mississippi, who played a leading role in the formation of new counties.
