Caruaru

Caruaru is a city in the northeastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco. It has about 314 951 inhabitants and is the main town in the hinterland of the state. The city is located at the middle reaches of the Rio Ipojuca, about 135 km from the capital of Pernambuco, Recife, removed.

The area of Caruaru was originally made by organized in Quilombos runaway slaves arable. After that it was colonized by the Portuguese noble family Rodrigues de Sá and exploited for agricultural purposes. The name of the city has African origins and refers to the vegetation that encountered the slaves in their colonization.

Today, the city lives mainly from the processing of agricultural products of the surrounding area such as cassava, beans, bananas, beef and tomatoes. Importance are thus the food, textile and leather industry.

The city is the seat of the diocese Caruaru.

In June, the city is known as the " Forró - capital ", during the feast of John ( in Brazil as São João or Festa Junina known). The festival usually takes 30 days in which you can find typical dishes and traditional music.
