Casalattico

Casalattico is a town in Lazio, Frosinone in central Italy, with 618 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). It is located 49 km east of Frosinone and 131 km east of Rome.

Geography

Casalattico is located on the northern slopes of the massif of Monte Cairo overlooking the valley of the Melfa. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle di Comino.

The municipality consists of the villages Casalattico, scrub, Monforte (formerly Mortale ) Montattico, San Nazario and Sant'Andrea.

The neighboring municipalities are Arpino, Atina, Casalvieri, Colle San Magno, Santopadre and Terelle.

History

Titus Pomponius Atticus had an estate here. This proves an inscription stating that Pomponius built a road connecting Montattico with Atina. He is also the namesake of Casalattico ( Casale Attico = house of Atticus ) and Montattico. In the migration period, the area was heavily affected.

Before the year 1000 the Benedictine monastery of San Nazario was probably built over a Roman temple on the banks of Melfa. The area was at that time the Principality of Capua. The princes Pandulf IV and V. Pandulf confirmed in each case to the monastery of Montecassino the possession of San Nazario.

On September 9, 1349 the municipal area was devastated by a major earthquake.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the monastery of San Nazario was abandoned and became a quarry for the surrounding hamlets. In the 19th century, the area was a center of brigands. Since the beginning of the 20th century, many inhabitants of the village emigrated to Ireland and opened small businesses in the food court. As recently as the 1990s, the majority of fish and chips stalls were operated in the Republic of Ireland by descendants of immigrants from Casalattico and its vicinity - a classic example of a chain migration.

1927 Casalattico became a municipality in the newly founded province of Frosinone. During World War II the church was, as she lay on the Gustav line completely evacuated. After the war, until the 1970s, a phase of emigration. Today, the church lives from agriculture and the rise of eco-tourism.
