Casanare Department

The Departamento de Casanare is a department in central and eastern Colombia. It extends from the central highlands ( eastern flank of the Andes) far to the northeast, along the river Río Meta almost to the border of Venezuela. The Departamento de Casanare is bordered to the north by the Departamento del Arauca, Vichada in the southeast, to the south by Meta and to the west by the Departamento de Boyacá.

Due to the oil production prospects for the region are very good. In agriculture, the rice dominates. In addition, yuca, sugar cane, corn, cacao, sorghum, and beans are grown. An important role is played by the cattle. The cutting down of the forest comes to less important.

Administrative subdivision

The Departamento de Casanare consists of 19 municipalities. The population figures are based on the census of DANE 2005.
