Casbah

The Kasbah of the Algerian capital Algiers is a castle in the strict sense ( Kasbah ) from the 16th century, in the broad sense so is the old town of Algiers referred to, which was declared in 1992 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Description

The predominantly formed in the Ottoman period and a UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town ( Kasbah ) has many winding streets. There are scores of mosques, as well as many palaces of Moorish times and the citadel from the 16th century. The oldest mosque is the Great Mosque ( Jamaa el Kebir ) in the Rue de la Marine of 1324, which was renewed in 1794 and whose origins date back to the 11th century. The New Mosque ( Jamaa el Jedid ) of the 17th century in the shape of a Greek cross. Worth mentioning are also the Ketchaoua Mosque of 1794 and the Sidi- Abdarahman Mosque, named after the patron saint of Algiers.
