Casco de Leiro

The helmet Casco de Leiro is a ritual hat from the late Bronze Age, probably dating from around 1000 BC.

The object was made ​​from a single casting blank. Then horizontal bands ornaments has been driven in the entire surface. The height is with tip ( 2.3 cm ) 15 cm, diameter 19.5 cm and has a weight of 270 grams. The style of ornament is very similar to the usually found from the Bronze Age in Central Europe golden hats of the type Schiffer city. An analysis of their potential importance has not yet been carried out ( 2003).

He was found on April 7, 1976 on the beach of the municipality Leiro ( Rianxo ), in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. On this day, wanted the local fishermen, JM ª Vicente Somoza, build a new boathouse. The straightening of the floor, he destroyed the clay pot in which there was the hat. He immediately reported his find to the local authorities. Today you can visit him at the Museum " Archaeological e Histórico " in A Coruña.
