Casimiro de Abreu

Casimiro de Abreu Casimiro de Abreu Marques actually José ( born January 4, 1839 the ranch Indaicu, Barra de São João, today Cidade de Casimiro de Abreu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, † October 18, 1860 in Nova Friburgo ) was a Brazilian poet who is considered one of the most romantic of his country.

Life

Casimiro de Abreu was born on a plantation as a descendant of immigrant Portuguese. His father was a wealthy merchant. He studied commercial nature first in Nova Friburgo, later in Lisbon, Portugal where he lived 1853-1857. After his stay in Portugal he returned to Brazil and lived in Rio de Janeiro as a bohemian, where he published sporadically in various newspapers.

His first and only book " As primaveras ", a collection of his poetry, was published in 1859.

Casimiro de Abreu died in 1860 at the age of 21 years from the effects of tuberculosis disease. His belongings were burned.

He is considered an important representative of the Brazilian Saudosismus within the literature as well as one of the greatest literary romantics of his country.

Honors

The city Casimiro de Abreu with 22,000 inhabitants in the state of Rio de Janeiro was named after him in 1938 ( it was previously called Barra de Sao Joao ). His birthplace, standing there, was completely renovated in 1974 and is now a cultural center.
