Caspar Netscher

Caspar Netscher (* 1639 in Heidelberg, † January 15, 1684 in The Hague) was a portrait and genre painter.

Life

Netscher was the son of the sculptor Johann Netscher. He grew up in Arnhem and went with Hendrick Coster in teaching. There he was taught by the Master License Arnhem Willem Everwijn around 1654 in the workshop of Gerard Terborch to Deventer. 1658 or no later than early 1659 twisted Netscher to The Hague. There he worked for companies based art dealer, which he initially supplied mainly with copies of pictures of his teacher, but also other changes in the painter - a then completely common method.

In the summer of 1659 he gave up this rather poorly paid work with the intention of going to Italy to complete his education. His voyage took him first to Bordeaux, where he made a stopover. His life learned here, however, a decisive turn, because he already got married there on November 25, 1659 the Huguenot Godijn Margaretha, the daughter of a product originating in Liege toolmaker.

1662 to Netscher went with his young family - now the son Theodore was born - back to The Hague: On October 25, 1662 Netscher entry into the Hague painters' guild Pictura is documentary evidence. In The Hague he first painted genre scenes, which clearly reveal the influence of his teacher Terborch, because he devoted special care of the differentiated treatment of substances, such as oriental rugs, silk and brocade in their effect by light and shadow. One of his best known works is The Lacemaker, which was created in 1662 (London, Wallace Collection). Soon after, he turns to especially in portraiture, where he found great recognition. Even King William III. had her portrait painted by him.

Even his sons Theodore Netscher (* 1661 in Bordeaux, † 1732 in Hulst ) and Constantine Netscher (* 1668 in The Hague, † 1722 ibid.) were painters.
