Cass County (Illinois)

The Cass County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 13,642 inhabitants and a population density of 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Virginia.

Geography

The County is located west of the center of Illinois at the Illinois River and has an area of 994 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Cass County was formed on March 30, 1837 from the northern part of Morgan County. Named after Lewis Cass (1782-1866), a former governor of Michigan - Territory (1813-1831), U.S. - Minister of War of the United States (1831-1836) and U.S. - Foreign Minister ( 1857-1860 ).

1837 Cass County had 17 settlements. The houses were simple log cabins with one or two rooms and a fireplace. The first settlers mentioned by name was Eli Cox, who moved here in 1816. 1819 came the next settlers and a short time later, half a dozen immigrants from Germany. 1844 the first courthouse was built.
