Cass Elliot
Mama Cass Elliot ( born September 19, 1941 in Baltimore, † 29 July 1974 in London, England ) was an American singer and member of The Mamas and the Papas.
Life
She was born Ellen Naomi Cohen in Baltimore and grew up in Washington, DC on. Prior to her high school graduation she started singing and acting and went to school in the early 1960s, to New York City, then the center of folk music. She sang in several folk bands, until she met the mid-1960s John Phillips and his wife Michelle, and Denny Doherty. Together they formed the band The Mamas and the Papas.
The band existed for only a short time, but created the Flower Power movement formative hits like California Dreamin ' and Monday, Monday. Cass Elliot's version of Dream a Little Dream of Me is probably the most well-known interpretation of this song. After the birth of her daughter Owen Vanessa, in 1967 and the dissolution of the band in 1968, they have attempted a solo career. It's Getting Better and Make Your Own Kind Of Music are her best-known solo hits. In addition to the two solo albums Dream A Little Dream (1968) and Bubble Gum, Lemonade & Something For Mama ( 1969) she took in 1970 to a duet album with Dave Mason, sang in TV shows, along with Johnny Cash and Julie Andrews and contributed inter alia to the soundtracks for the films Pufnstuf (1970) and Doctors' Wives ( 1971) at.
In 1971, the band reformed to record one last album together, which, however, was less successful than the previous albums. The solo career of Mama Cass faltered, which was mainly caused by Elliots drug and alcohol excesses.
After the final separation of the Mamas and the Papas in 1972 should stand for a new beginning of her career. It was followed by three more solo albums: one named after her own album Cass Elliot ( with this title she wanted her " Mama Cass " image behind you ), The Road is No Place for a Lady and the concert recording Do not Call Me Mama Anymore. Success in the singles or album charts were made , however.
In Europe Elliot in 1974 with her solo show great success. Concerts in London Palladium sold out for two weeks, but she died within this period in the home of his friend, musician Harry Nilsson of a heart attack. The legend that she was choking on a ham sandwich, has survived to this day, but not the truth. Rather, since her youth severely obese Cass Elliot had so severely damaged her heart in attempts to reduce their weight through dieting shock that she finally succumbed to a heart failure.
Her daughter Owen Vanessa Elliott Ball B. is also a singer and is touring with the Beach Boys Al Jardine musicians.
When Jonathan Harvey's coming-out play " Beautiful Thing " in 1996 for filming decency to director Hettie Mc Donald opted for a soundtrack from a total of 15 images of the Mamas & Papas. Mama Cass is there the idol of adolescents Leah ( Tameka Empson played by ), sings excerpts from their songs.
In recent years, her song Make Your Own Kind Of Music experienced by the mystery series Lost among their fans a revival, as it ushered in the second season and later at various key scenes regarding the character Desmond Hume showed up again and again.
